I think it is "we" because the official proclamation is
"Habemus Papam" (We have a Pope)
When Benedict was elected my German colleague reported it with the headline " Habemus Europam" (We have Europe) because of Benedict's close connections with the Pan Europa Movement and the late Otto von Habsburg.
However, you should not make the common mistake of thinking that all RCs are Vatican Secret Agents for the EU. I just got an article accepted by a very traditionalist RC monthly, called Christian Order. Not only did the editor want the highly Eurosceptic, pro independence article but he included an advertisement for our CIB (Campaign for an Independent Britain) rally on 4 May. Richard North is addressing us. I believe he has an article in the same edition!
Incidentally, my article has already appeared in the very Protestant British Church Newspaper.
The whole thing seems to be being treated like a game show by the BBC. Next time, I expect they will organise a phone-in lottery to predict the 'winner'
I certainly fail to see why it is of more than passing interest to the bulk of the UK's population.
Yes I heard there had been a bit of argie-bargie at the Vatican.
