The EU's P45

Pro-EU blogger Jon Worth admits that the EU hasn't kept peace on the European Continent since WWII:

The EU should have stepped in earlier in the Balkans...

Let's put this into context. The Balkans conflict was a period of concentration camps, ethnic cleansing and more war crimes than you could shake a stick at for the first time since WWII on the European continent. A conflict that ended up with America and NATO trying to sort out. The excuse that "The EU should have stepped in earlier..." doesn't even cut the mustard.

The EU failed in its primary purpose at the first attempt - big time - and for that we are supposed to sacrifice our democracy...?

That Mr Worth sneaks in its failure with so much understatement is a sign of the embarrassing failure...

Back To School For Merkel

Courtesy of the Purple Scorpian I spot this 'breathtakingly stupid' remark from Merkel:

"History has shown that countries with a common currency never wage war against one another, and that is why the euro is far more than just a currency. If the euro fails, Europe fails. It must not fail, and will not fail,"

Purple Scorpion does the business of frisking this here. Merkel's comments can also be dismissed with one simple word: Yugoslavia.

...the transfer of major executive responsibilities to the bureaucratic Commission in Brussels will exacerbate popular feeling of alienation from government. To counter this feeling, strengthened local and regional democratic processes within the member states and effective Community regional economic and social policies will be essential.

Parliamentary sovereignty will be affected as we have seen. But the need for Parliament to play an increasing (if perhaps more specialised) role may develop. Firstly, although a European Parliament might in the longest term become an effective, directly elected democratic check upon the bureaucracy, this will not be for a long time, and certainly not in the decade to come. In the interval, to minimise the loss of democratic control it will be important that the British Parliamentarians should play an effective role both through the British membership in the European Parliament and through the processes of the British Parliament itself.
