Free Porn For The Poor

More evidence today that Labour have run out of ideas, the old chestnut of free computers and internet access has reared its ugly head again.

Labour has announced that the government will issue 270,000 laptops with free broadband to pupils from poorer backgrounds. There's nothing like a Brown re-announcement of old policies every so often, like here and here.

I would have thought that giving people free broadband access is counter productive for Labour, it means they can more easily access news that is not sympathetic to Labour's cause unlike the BBC. Realistically though I wonder how many of the laptops will actually end up here.

Intriguingly also today, Brown will try to rally the Parliamentary Labour Party tonight with the message that:

"We cannot and will not fight the election on small ideas but on big ideas,"

Big Ideas? Free laptops? Oh dear oh dear!

Parliamentary sovereignty will be affected as we have seen. But the need for Parliament to play an increasing (if perhaps more specialised) role may develop. Firstly, although a European Parliament might in the longest term become an effective, directly elected democratic check upon the bureaucracy, this will not be for a long time, and certainly not in the decade to come. In the interval, to minimise the loss of democratic control it will be important that the British Parliamentarians should play an effective role both through the British membership in the European Parliament and through the processes of the British Parliament itself.
