Croydon Football club

Not the most exciting title for a post I grant you, but this news today was a little interesting:

A FOOTBALL club has spoken of its shock after its chairman was shot dead over the weekend.

Croydon Athletic chairman David Le Cluse was discovered with gunshot wounds in a garage in Wallington on Saturday morning.

Police are investigating the 44-year-old's death which they are currently treating as "unexplained", and a post mortem is due to take place this week.

But there's more, the club's owner, Mazhar Majeed, was allegedly involved in the recent cricket fixing allegations:

Majeed - who appointed Mr Le Cluse as chairman - was arrested and bailed as part of an investigation into a conspiracy to defraud bookmakers, and has also been arrested and bailed in connection with allegations that he used the Thornton Heath-based football club to launder money.

Majeed subsequently went into hiding after the allegations emerged, and all the players and the coaching team quit on the pitch the game after.

There seems to be an unhealthy pattern emerging with cricket fixing allegations:
  • 2002 South African cricketer (banned for life for match fixing) Hansie Cronje was killed by a plane crash in suspicious circumstances.

  • 2007 Open verdict on the death of former Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer amid allegations of match fixing.

  • 2010 Chairman of Croydon and friend of Mazhar Majeed apparently takes his own life amid allegations of 'spot fixing'.
Oh what a murky world.
