The Budget

Brown has just announced the Budget for March 24th. Which rules out an election before 22nd April:

Possible Election Dates:
  • 22 April 2010 (Dissolution Friday 26 March)

  • 29 April 2010 (Dissolution Tuesday 6 April)

  • 6 May 2010 (Dissolution Monday 12 April)

  • 3 June 2010 (Dissolution Monday 10 May)

  1. It will be 6 May. All other bets are off.

22 April is out if budget is on 24 March. 29 April is a week before the local elections and there is no way Brown will leave it to the last possible date.

  2. Agree, May 6th was always likely, I'm just trying to cover any possibility that Brown might do something stupid.

Why does 24th March budget rule out 22nd April election, dissolution could be 2 days after the budget?

  3. It could, but Brown will want to hog the headlines for as long as possible after the budget. Once he calls the election the media have to give equal air time.

Also, it is too cynical to have the election the day before the GDP figures for Q1 are released. He would be accused of trying to hide something.
