UKIP Outspent The Tories In Oldham

Michael Crick has published the official figures from Oldham Council which show that UKIP outspent the Tories in the recent Oldham by-election:

The figures submitted by each of the major parties to the local election authorities by the deadline of today (Friday) show that each of the major parties spent as follows:

Cons £39,432
Lab £97, 085
Lib Dem £94,540
UKIP £43,855
Throughout the campaign the Conservatives denied accusations that they were not taking the by-election seriously.

You have to wonder why on earth the Tories continued to deny that they were holding back on the election. Did they really think that their spending figures were never going to be released? Are they really that stupid? Going by the form of the Tory chairman the answer is quite clearly yes they are.

Tory Membership Plummets

I'm slightly late to this, but I notice Tory Chairman Baroness Warsi has had a difficult couple of days. After a poor performance on Question Time last night, especially this answer to a good question on pre-election promises:

I see that she also struggles to answer simple questions on Tory membership numbers, which surely as a Chairman she should know as a matter of bread and butter basics:

Intruidged, and suspicious for the reasons behind her reluctance, I quickly found the answer:

Tory membership down by a third... since Cameron became leader...dropping from 258,239 to 177,000.

ConHome acknowledges that it is a steep decline. Oh dear this Cameron Tory revolution is going well, isn't it?

...the transfer of major executive responsibilities to the bureaucratic Commission in Brussels will exacerbate popular feeling of alienation from government. To counter this feeling, strengthened local and regional democratic processes within the member states and effective Community regional economic and social policies will be essential.

Parliamentary sovereignty will be affected as we have seen. But the need for Parliament to play an increasing (if perhaps more specialised) role may develop. Firstly, although a European Parliament might in the longest term become an effective, directly elected democratic check upon the bureaucracy, this will not be for a long time, and certainly not in the decade to come. In the interval, to minimise the loss of democratic control it will be important that the British Parliamentarians should play an effective role both through the British membership in the European Parliament and through the processes of the British Parliament itself.
